A good friend of mine (Angela) was recently invited to go on a spearfishing trip with one of her best friends. She ended up diving twice, although they had 4 tanks a piece. Apparently her lazy ass wouldn't get out of bed until 8:45 am so they had a late morning start. Both dives were out about 40 miles. Good thing they had a fast boat! Seems it only took them about an hour to get out to the reef from St Pete.

The following is Angela's dive report. You can also click any of the pictures on the right to enlarge them.

"We could not have asked for a more calmer day and the visibility was divine! The water was a gorgeous blue! On the first dive we went down about 110ft, in search of a ledge, but all there was a sandy bottom with some rocks and crevices. My buddy was with me the whole time and he helped me spot out the fish I could shoot (size etc.). The first one was a red grouper, he was just sitting in a hole, so I hovered over him, aimed and shot. and what a shot! Right between the eyes on top of his head and through the gill. he died instantly, barely twitched! I was beside myself with joy! I was clapping my hands and giggling in 112ft of water! Then my buddy saw a pretty big black grouper, and he was pointing it out to me and I just couldn’t see him. So rather than risk the grouper getting away, he shot it. I was bummed because it was bigger than my red! But happy for him. Saw a few more fish, took some long shots and missed. You don’t realize how much fun you are having when I happened to look at my pressure gauge, YIKES! I better start ascending so I could have enough time to do a deco stop! Overall that dive was pretty boring as far a scenery is concerned but a heck of a lot of fun!"

"Next stop was the Mexican Pride. We got there and there were about 5 fishing boats on top of it so we anchor up at a spot kinda close but not on top of the wreck. We could see the fishermen’s look of disgust when we stopped and were setting up our gear and spearguns! Hahaha it was funny."

"We descend and have to swim for a bit to get to the wreck, I thought I lost my buddy, so it was a bit unnerving for me, but he was above me about 15ft the whole time keeping an eye on me. I was getting very frustrated because both my friends had long blade fins on and I had my crappy El Cheapo fins so I had to work 3x as hard to keep up. Luckily I had a Alum. 100. There was a pesky remora just following me down and would not leave me alone! He was pretty big, I was just glad he wasn’t a barracuda!"

"We were down 120+ feet and we approach the wreck and let me tell you all, it was breath taking! I never thought I would say this, but I wish I had a camera with me instead of a speargun (NOT!). It was like I was swimming in an aquarium! Above the wreck were about 50 Goliath Grouper hanging out and feeding on fish. Then I look down and see 2 big nurse sharks, about 6ft long, just laying on top of the wreck and next to them was the biggest stingray I have seen to date, it was at LEAST 6 ft across, just laying there having a rest! Not to mention the variety of fish that were swimming around, grouper, snapper, mackerel, triggerfish, I can’t write them all, just too many! My buddy goes up to the nurse sharks and pets them, but they get pissed off, and swim into the wreck, I was laughing underwater again. they come back out and lay on the wreck again. hehehe then we see a school of Amerjack. He is frantically pointing and telling me to go for it! I was a little tired from trying to keep up with him, so I just tell him to go for it, he nails a huge AmberJack, it died very quickly. He takes the shaft out and reloads it. As he is reloading, I could not resist and take a shot at one as well. I nail him right behind the gill plate towards the spine. Almost perfect except it was a long shot and my spear does not go all the way through. My buddy scrambles to grab him, he gets a hold of the spear to try and push it all the way through but all this does it get the fish angry and it shakes off the spear and swims away. BUMMED! So we swim around some more, checking out the wreck and other marine life, and as my buddy is looking in a hole to see if he can find some grouper, I look up and there is another school of AJ! Wow, they were all so big. I try and signal for him to look and he was still busy looking inside the wreck, so I just swim up and go for it. I aim and nail another one, stoned him! I am a great shot! So I got to spear an AJ! My buddy happens to look up and sees me with a fish speared, he swims up, takes him off the spear, well, we got tangled up in the line, we were both using line guns. Had to make sure the AJ was dead, and Yikes! my buddy is low on air! SO we start ascending, still tangled up, I am laughing because it was so exciting and funny (? I KNOW, what a Spaz!) So we get to 18 ft for our deco stop and my buddy ran out of air, so we buddy breath, I am so excited looking at my catch! We surface and look around, at first we couldn’t see the boat, then we see it, wow, we have to swim a little ways to get to it, but notice that all the fishing boats were gone. Damn Spearfishermen! Hahaha We had to inflate our BC’s using our breath, we had no more gas in our tanks! SO we start to swim towards the boat and I am beginning to feel a little nervous because we were hauling 2 huge Ajs with us. kinda like we were trolling. But we were just so excited and pumped up that I don’t think about it too much! In any case, I had a great time, I think that next time I won’t go too much deeper than 80ft, not enough time! SO many fish!"

"If you all ever get a chance to dive the Mexican Pride, DO IT! It was exceptional! I am sure that I am missing out on telling you other things about the dives but I am just so excited about my adventure, I feel like I am babbling. My buddies dove 1 more time, in 85ft (a ledge), and I was supposed to dive another time but it was getting late and we headed back in.
